Can My Hotel Carpets Be Restored After a Pipe Burst?

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Don't let water damage close your hotel. SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview has the know-how to quickly remediate the damage.

SERVPRO Can Efficiently Remove Water from Your Kenner Hotel

Being next to the airport, Kenner is home to many hotels providing luxurious rooms to travelers and those on vacation. If water damage from burst pipes impacts your hotel carpets, you need water mitigation quickly. You want as little as possible disruption to your guests coming in and out of the hotel. The last thing you want is guests writing bad reviews because of water issues.

How Do You Restore Carpeting After Water Damage?

More than just your carpets get impacted by water intrusion in your hotel. Hallways, staircases, and wooden structures such as the service desk can be damaged. Water restoration in Kenner involving carpets begins with the right water extraction process. The proper extraction tools can remove water faster than drying alone. SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview has trained water restoration technicians (WRT) who precisely know what is needed to restore your carpets.

Stationary Extraction Tools

While moving extraction tools help certain types of materials, they are not always the best thing for plush carpets. Stationary extraction methods involve using the technician's weight to apply downward pressure and push the water to the surface. The water then gets pulled through a vacuum system attached to the device. Our largest stationary units can cover 200 square inches at one time. Other extraction methods our WRT techs can use include:

  • Portable or truck-mounted units
  • Carpet wands
  • Self-propelled extraction tools

Once the water gets extracted from your carpet and padding, the drying process begins. We use industrial-strength air movers and dehumidifiers in the correct ratio for optimum drying power. Our teams work quickly and efficiently to get the job done. You want to get back to business as soon as possible, and we want that too.

For any commercial water damage needs, SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview is here with a team of trained professionals; We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. Contact SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview at (504) 468-3046 for expert water restoration service.

3 Things You Should Not Do After a Flood

5/4/2021 (Permalink)

When dealing with floodwater, many homeowners are tempted to put themselves or their families at risk in an effort to save their home or their possessions. This is usually not a good idea. These are three things you should not do after a flood.

  1. Don't Stay in Your Home
After a flood, there is not much you can do to prevent damage by staying. If you have time, you can place sandbags, move possessions to higher ground, board up windows and take other precautions, but once flooding is imminent, it is best to evacuate to a shelter. Attempting to remain in your home puts you at risk of drowning, electrocution, and contact with contaminants in the water. It also puts the emergency workers who will have to assist you if you get in trouble at risk.

  2. Don't Rely on Do-It-Yourself Solutions
You may be able to repair the water damage from a minor flood yourself, but when majorflooding occurs, by the time it is safe to re-enter buildings, the damage is usually too severe for most do-it-yourself attempts to be successful. Have a plan in place to deal with the floodwater. Contact your insurance company. Don't count on being able to obtain equipment, such as generators, protective gear, and pumps, that you would need to attempt to dry out your property yourself.

  3. Don't Walk or Drive Through Standing Water
Downed power lines can electrify standing water, posing an electrocution risk. As little as six inches of water can damage your car and cause traction issues. Flood water poses significant risks to homeowners attempting to salvage their property after a flood. It is best to let your insurance company and restoration professionals take the lead and avoid putting yourself at risk, in most cases.

Does Your North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview Home Have Leaking Windows?

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Water Leak Around a Window

The natural elements can wear down the integrity of a home. Over time, the homeowner may notice leakage around a window, which can possibly result in wood rot, mold, and water damage. The longer the leak is left unaddressed, the more the repairs will cost.

Locate the Problem

Even a slow drip can mean that more water is sitting inside of the wall. Once a homeowner notices moisture trickling from a window when it rains, the first step is to carefully look at the wall around the area to find the source of the leak. However, thanks to gravity, appearances can be deceiving; liquid may pool in one place, but that place is not always the leak's origin.

Two common problem areas are the edge and the rubber seal. The gap between the edge and the surrounding wall is usually sealed with caulk. Eventually, the caulk dries out and begins to peel and chip. Like caulk, the rubber seal situated between the panes and frame can ultimately dry out, creating rips in the rubber.

Gauge the Severity of Damage

Depending on the severity of the damage, the window may need to be replaced. A replacement is usually warranted when decaying or softness is found on nearby surfaces. However, even if the surrounding surfaces seem to be structurally sound, the homeowner should not just re-caulk the gaps without getting an expert's opinion on the full extent of the damage.

SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview Can Help!

A specialist at SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview can determine whether any ceiling tiles or drywall have sustained damage. After he assesses the situation, the restoration technician will give the homeowner the best remediation option to make the damage disappear. By acting quickly, the homeowner can prevent expensive repairs in the future. SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview is always ready to help the residents of Kenner and the city's surrounding communities solve their water damage problems.

Signs of a Water Damaged Ceiling

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

A water damaged ceiling is unsightly and dangerous. Before you can repair the ceiling you must locate the issue that is causing the water damage first. If you repair the ceiling without fixing any underlying issues you are asking for a repeat situation. If you plan to locate the source of the problem yourself, be sure to shut off the electricity and water flow in your home.

Telltale Signs of Water Damage

“Sweat” stains - If it looks like there is a darker shade of your paint on your ceiling, you most likely have the start of a water leak. This causes a sweat-like appearance on your ceiling and you should take action before it gets worse.

Water stains - Usually brown in color, water stains mean there is a leak or there was a leak. Regardless of how big or small, the water stain is, the leak should be located and stopped. Water stains will usually happen from a leaky roof, overflowing of sinks, tubs, and toilets on the second floor, and cracked pipes.

Ceiling Bubbles - If you notice your ceiling swelling or bubbling, there is a buildup of moisture in the drywall. If this is not taken care of the ceiling can collapse, causing a dangerous and messy situation. It may seem like a good idea to poke the bubble, but there can be more water than expected, so it is best to let the professionals take care of it.

Mold Growth: If you see mold, you can be sure you have water damage, which is why it must be addressed immediately. Mold is extremely dangerous and within 48 hours it can grow and spread, to other parts of the home.

While you wait for SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview to arrive to mitigate and restore your water damaged home, you can read our process for mitigation here.

How To Flush Your Hot Water Heater Like a (SERV) Pro!

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

Flushing the water heater in your North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview home might be something you have never thought of. But like most household appliances, it too can accumulate mineral deposits and sediments that can stop your heater from running efficiently. It is recommended to flush your water heater once a year to ensure debris does not corrode your heater and to maintain optimal hot water temperature.

There are two types of water heaters: gas and electric. The main difference is whether you will be turning off the gas or electricity supply before you begin flushing. After turning off the power source, you must turn off your heater’s supply of water by shutting off the cold water valve. It is best to wait overnight so you can be sure the water isn’t hot, but if you can’t wait then use caution when flushing.

The next step is to turn on the hot water elsewhere in the home, such as a sink or tub. This will prevent a vacuum from forming as the tank drains. Now you are ready to start draining your heater.

You can control where the water goes by connecting a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of your heater. Place the hose in a bucket or where you can safely dispose of the water. Open the pressure relief valve near the top of your water heater and watch the water drain from your heater. Once it is empty, reopen the cold water valve at the top of your tank and then shut it off again to get any lasting sediments that did not get flushed from the first round.

After the water starts to run clear and is sediment-free, you should close the drain valve and turn the water supply line back on. The water from the sink or tub you have running should start to smoothly exit the faucet, and that is how you know the air has been pushed out. You can turn the gas or electric back on to let the water heater begin to heat back up.

If you are experiencing problems with your water pressure, or temperature in your tank you should contact a professional in the North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview area. Hot water heaters are extremely important to keep your home functioning. Take care of it, and it can save you time and money in the future!

Why Water Damage Must Be Addressed Immediately

8/19/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage is extremely serious and needs to be addressed immediately in your North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview home. Within minutes, water can spread through your property and saturate everything. This includes walls, floors, upholstery, books, documents, and pictures. Within 1 to 24 hours your drywall will begin to swell and break down, a musty odor will appear, and metal surfaces will tarnish. Between 48 hours to 1 week, mold will grow and spread, paint will blister, metal will corrode, and doors will begin to warp. After one week the damage will be so serious that the cost and time to restore your home will be astronomical, and the structural safety of the home will pose risks to those who live there.

Because water damage is not uncommon in the North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview area it is important to familiarize yourself with the below steps on how to mitigate water damage in your home.

  1. Turn off the electricity to prevent electrical problems.
  2. Address the source of the water and stop it from flooding your home.
  3. Remove standing water with specialized pumps or vacuums, but you can also do this manually.
  4. Dry out the remaining water with fans and dehumidifiers to speed the drying process.
  5. Sanitize affected items based on what type of water it came into contact with.
  6. Restore items that can be salvaged and replace damaged items to prevent contamination and mold growth.

If the damage is too large for you to handle on your own, know that your local SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview is available 24/7 to restore your home,  personal belongings, and give you back your peace of mind.

Better Landscaping Means Less Flooding for your North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview Home

8/17/2020 (Permalink)

With the unpredictable weather in Louisana, by the time lunch rolls around after you have left for the day, your North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview home can be flooded in a moment’s notice. Switching up the landscaping outside of your home can help reduce flooding outside of your home that could potentially cause indoor flooding. Below are four tips to help plan ahead if a neighbor’s pool floods into your yard or there is a storm surge.

  1. Add Heavier Mulch - Lighter mulch can easily be picked up by water and clog your drains causing a backup of water. Heavier mulch can absorb more water as well as stay in place. Don’t forget to place mulch six inches from the siding of your home so it does not rot your home’s exterior.
  2. Grow a Garden - Planting native plants and plants with high moisture tolerance will help prevent soil erosion and allow water to drain better.
  3. Grade your Yard - Sloping the ground around your home will allow water to flow away from your home’s foundation.
  4. Use Rain Barrels - Rain barrels collect rainwater from downspouts to redirect moisture away from your home. SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview Tip - use the collected water for both indoor and outdoor plants, or make a birdbath!

After taking measures to help reduce flooding in your yard always double-check your work. Excessive rain or dry spells can cause your landscaping to naturally change and consequently reverting your work. After extreme weather check to see how your drainage methods are doing and adjust accordingly. In the event your home does flood, SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview is available 24/7 to help minimize damage and salvage the contents of your home.

Quick Tips for Storm Safety Anywhere You Go | SERVPRO® of North Kenner, Harahan, and Lakeview

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

lighting striking hillside during storm at night Have you been affected by a storm event? SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan, and Lakeview is available and ready to assist you with any storm damage.

Summertime is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors, but when sudden storms pop up, staying safe is of paramount importance. Thunderstorms may come and go quickly, but while they are in the area, they can cause a concerning amount of damage.

While the safest place to be during a storm is at home, if a sudden storm pops up when you are away, here are some practical tips for safety.

Practical Tips for Staying Safe From Sudden Storms

Know your options for shelter. When you are made aware of a severe weather scenario and are safely at home, remaining there is the best thing you can do so you can wait out the storm. However, this is a luxury that will not always be present. If you are caught out in a storm, you can shelter in your car as long as you can pull over safely and cut off your engine.

Practice electrical safety. A lightning strike can hurt a structure in many ways, but the most common way is via a power surge. As the lightning travels through the home’s electrical system, the wires will become overwhelmed with charge and transfer that to anything plugged into an outlet. If you can, go through the area you are in and unplug everything before a storm. In general, it is best to also have surge protectors throughout your home and office.

Avoid direct contact with concrete. Concrete structures are so sturdy in part because of how they are built. As concrete is poured around metal, it creates a great structure—but also causes a concern if there is lightning nearby. The metal in concrete can disperse electricity if the building is struck by lightning, so avoid touching these surfaces directly if possible.

Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. If you are out enjoying the day when a storm rolls in, make sure you are not rushing back out too soon and putting yourself in danger. Lightning strikes can travel tremendous distances, causing officials to urge people to stay inside for at least half an hour after the last clap of thunder.

If your home sustains damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact us at any hour to learn more about our storm restoration process.

Flooded laundry room with a rubber duck floating in the water. SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview makes removing standing water first priority when beginning the water damage restoration process.

SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan& Lakeview Suggests to Contact Us Immediately Upon Discovering a Water Leak for Fast Mitigation

Sometimes water emergencies are splashy affairs, with dramatic breaks in water mains or flooding from appliances in your  home. More frequently seemingly minor leaks or loose connections in plumbing slowly create severe water damage scenarios. The skilled water damage technicians on our crews know how to mitigate the loss no matter what the cause.

When plumbing fails in a residence, the resulting water damage can be a build up of days, weeks, or years of obscured drips or seepage. The compromised pipes and fixtures and the resultant damage may remain hidden for a time, but eventually, the harm done makes itself known. Drywall crumbles, flooring warps or buckles, and microbial growth can become evident. Our highly-qualified water damage restoration experts employ effective strategies mastered in IICRC courses to reverse and resolve the problems.

Assessment of the damage is the first task undertaken. Water can take unexpected paths, and SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview crews investigate the evidence observable thoroughly so that we address all the aspects of the incursions. If necessary, we remove sections of drywall or pull off the kick plates beneath cabinets to expose the damage. Our employees employ moisture meters and infrared scanning devices to scope out the area, including locating hidden caches of water that collected between walls, under floors, and above ceilings.

We operate powerful wet vacuums to extract the water puddled or soaked into porous furnishings like carpeting or upholstery. Then we use the moisture baselines measure by electronic meters to determine drying goals aimed at reducing moisture to normal levels in structural components and fixtures. SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview crew members position air movers and dehumidifiers to achieve the drying goals, adding heat to create the balance needed to move moisture out of saturated items.

Throughout the water damage mitigation process SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview technicians are on the lookout for secondary issues such as microbial growth. Water intrusions that exist more than 24 to 48 hours provide mold spores the fuel needed to grow and multiply into full-blown colonies, often hidden with the slow leaks.

Of course, we also arrange for repair or replacement of the plumbing fittings that were the source of the water damage. SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview recommends inspection of pipes on a regular basis to ensure no further water damage in your home.

SERVPRO® of N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview offers full-service water damage mitigation, including water removal and structural drying. Call us at: (504)-468-3046

SERVPRO Works Quickly to Remove Water and Prevent Further Damage

8/2/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding in a N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview home has some immediate effects. Paper items such as books, legal documents, and magazines quickly become compromised and have to be thrown out. In most cases, these are minor expenses compared to a loss of personal property like carpets and living room furniture.

SERVPRO concentrates its water removal efforts for N. Kenner, Harahan, & Lakeview homes to get the water out as quickly as possible and to reduce the damaging effects caused by the water before our teams removed it. First, our IICRC certified technicians prevent any more water from entering the home. In most cases, the water in the home is a plumbing issue; technicians turn off the water as close to the broken appliance or pipe as possible. If needed, we turn off the water line leading into the home.

As one team member turns off the water, others bring in commercial grade pumps to remove any standing water. Once technicians bring the water down to just above the surface of carpets, they switch to extraction wands. In addition to removing water from the surface, these devices also work very well at drawing water out of carpets.

After they removed the bulk of the water, technicians begin to dry property. They remove any soaked furniture and other property out of the home and place it on blocks or pallets. SERVPRO teams do this to allow airflow around and underneath each item, and so water can drain out of them, so varnish and fabric colors do not run and stain carpets and rugs.

Once team members move the items out of the way, our carpet specialists lift the carpets to dry them. If there is a pad underneath, they remove the carpet to dispose of the pad. Pads disintegrate quickly after absorbing large amounts of water, and it is cheaper to replace them than to attempt to dry them.

After removing the pad, specialist lay the carpet back down. They raise a section at opposite ends and place air movers at one end to blow warm, dry air under and over the carpet and place an exhaust fan at the other to draw damp air away from the carpet.

SERVPRO of N. Kenner, Harahan,& Lakeview knows that removing standing water is the first, best step to reducing damage to personal property. If you need our services for flooding or another issue, call us today at (504) 468-3046. We are here to help return your home to a dry, safe condition.

Water Damage Strikes Fast ... So Does SERVPRO!

The Answer for Minimizing the Effects of Water Intrusion into Your Metairie Home...SERVPRO of N. Kenner Harahan & Lakeview!

You have to act with speed when dealing with damaging water events. The longer the water soaks into your furniture, walls, and carpets, the more harm you should expect. Some incidents may make your property uninhabitable, which means spending more time out of your home. When working with professional restorers in Metairie, it is possible to identify the extent of the damage, what is restorable, and what you need to replace.

When our SERVPRO technicians arrive at your home to perform water damage restoration, we start by determining the level of saturation on the affected materials and locate all the areas with the damage. We use moisture sensors and meters to do this work, and at this point, we are in a position to determine all the procedures to use during the restoration and answer any questions that a client may be having.

The goal of our SERVPRO technicians is to minimize the damages and return your property to its preloss state. We do this by employing water extraction, evaporation, and dehumidification procedures. Some of the drying equipment we use include air heaters, air movers, and dehumidifiers. If we have set up air heaters and air movers in your property, the moisture evaporates from the wet items and surfaces into the air. To avoid secondary damage after condensation takes place, we have to remove the excess moisture from the air in a process known as dehumidification.

Right from the point when our SERVPRO technicians do the initial evaluation and assessment, we develop a drying goal and start monitoring the site. Some of the monitoring procedures include: taking the humidity and temperature readings, updating the drying progress, as well as using a moisture meter to check the moisture content in the different structural materials. Checking the indoor environment quality, work progress, and the equipment operation may be part of the monitoring.

SERVPRO of N. Kenner Harahan & Lakeview offers industry-proven cleaning and restoration services that meet commercial and residential needs. For immediate assistance, kindly call (504) 496-0193 and allow our experienced technicians make your property “Like it never even happened.”

When It Rains Don't Let It Pour!

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

When most people think about water damage they think of record breaking floods, washer machines and pipes busting in their homes. What they don’t think of is ONE inch of rain. Yes, I said it correctly ONE INCH. One inch of rainfall doesn’t sound like it can do much harm, but when one inch of rain falls on a roof without gutters it allows nearly 2000 gallons of water to soak into the ground around your homes foundation. Gutters are the key to help protect your home against water damage. Gutters collect the rain rolling down your roof and divert it away from your home, and prevent flooding from happening. Another reason gutters benefit your home is by protecting your soil from eroding. When you have faulty gutters it causes the water to wash away the soil and leave the foundation of your home vulnerable and unprotected.

Things to Keep an ye On:

Debris Build Up: Can lead to pools of water forming on your roof and eventually leaking through your ceiling and into your home. Use pressure washer or leaf blower to clean them out quarterly

Storm Damage: After a rain, wind, or hail storm it is important to inspect your gutters for cracks or breaks. If damage has been caused, you can fill the holes with gutter caulk.

Old Gutters: Older gutters are more susceptible to damage or contain open seams. Make quarterly routine checks for repairs.

New Orleans Water Extraction from Flooring Materials Is Customized by SERVPRO

SERVPRO Has Industry Leading Water Pumps for Extraction and Mitigation for New Orleans Properties

The Best Choice For Water Removal In New Orleans

Flooding brings to mind major disasters with broken dams and entire neighborhoods under water. Despite these visuals, as painful as they can be, many homeowners and residents can suffer just as much damage and incur as much of a repair and restoration bill from failed plumbing like a ruptured sink pipe or a water heater with a faulty high-pressure release switch.

Regardless of the source, water removal is a recurring event for many New Orleans residents. That is why customers return to SERVPRO for their needs. They know that each of our technicians trains on the latest equipment and stays updated on the best methods to help our neighbors return to a dry, safe home once again.

Once they turn off the water at the main or the point of failure and depending on the level of water, our removal teams begin with a commercial grade pump for higher amounts. We also have portable submersible pumps for two or more inches of water depth. Depending on the size of the home, team members can use machines that plug directly into the home’s electrical service or into one of the generators we keep in our inventory. For large homes, condos, and apartments, we also have a truck-mounted pump that can operate 24/7 if needed.

For lower amounts that cover the surface, SERVPRO technicians switch to smaller, extraction devices that work very efficiently to draw water out of carpets and wooden floors. We can set up drying mats which draw water efficiently from the joints of boards. For small rooms and closets, they can use a device that looks similar to a vacuum cleaner. Our team members can adjust the rate of airflow and amount of heat in these wands to ensure they do not cause any secondary harm to the carpets or floors as they draw out the water trapped inside.

Carpet pads, however, quickly deteriorate once they begin to soak up water. If the water remained on the carpet overnight, we recommend lifting the carpet and replacing the pad immediately after completing the extraction process.

At SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview, our goal is to help each of our neighbors and friends return to a home that looks just like it did before the disaster, no matter how large or small. If any part of your home is or has been underwater, call us today at (504) 468-3046 to help make it right.

Professional Mitigation Services Include Water Cleanup after a Disaster in New Orleans

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

We have strategically placed our equipment throughout this room that had water damage.

From storms to pipes, SERVPRO can clean up water from your home

Its closeness to the Atlantic means New Orleans gets doused with rain and other wet weather, including hurricanes, quite often. Homeowners and businesses can expect many of these events to push water into their homes, warehouses, and buildings occasionally. Getting the water out quickly can help prevent many subsequent problems from developing.

When your property in New Orleans gets waterlogged from terrible weather conditions or an internal water leak, water cleanup services should start immediately. SERVPRO’s team of restoration experts and technicians can help ensure that this happens efficiently. After removing any visible water, we begin cleaning up the affected area by using smaller extraction units.

While clean water from leaks often does not cause hazardous conditions from pathogens and other biological hazards, it can happen when water sits for too long a period. A handful of pathogens can multiply rapidly whenever conditions favor their proliferation. From storms and flooding incidents, water covering your building or home’s floor most likely does contain health hazards.

However, we must first reinstate dry conditions before we can eradicate any pathogens. Wet conditions can significantly diminish the effect of our antimicrobial agents. SERVPRO teams quickly dry out a damp home with the use of air movers and air scrubbers. Our air scrubbers contain HEPA filters to remove airborne microbes, such as mold spores and viruses. This helps immensely in keeping mold and mildew damage from occurring and causing problems in the future.

Once we finish the water cleanup process and we restore your home “Like it never even happened,” life can get back to normal for you and your family. SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview wants to help families in the River Ridge and Jefferson areas recover from disasters stemming from both weather disasters and those that happen because of broken water pipes that create disastrous leaks in your plumbing. Call us at (504) 468-3046 so we can help restore your home quickly and get things back to normal again.

New Orleans' Water Removal Team Discusses Equipment And Drying Procedures

SERVPRO Proudly Helps New Orleans Residents with Water Removal and Restoration Services

SERVPRO Technicians Are Highly Skilled in the Water Removal and Drying Processes to Protect New Orleans Properties

Whenever water enters your home in New Orleans, many of your possessions and structural materials are at risk of undergoing extensive damage. Excessive moisture can ruin the carpet and weaken the structural strength of wooden materials. Wet organic materials like paper and wood are food sources for mold and can be affected if given enough time and the right temperature.

When preventing microbial growth resulting from a broken pipe or malfunctioning appliance, moisture levels must return to preloss conditions within 48 hours. The water removal process in New Orleans first involves extraction, then rapid structural drying. Using specialized equipment, our SERVPRO technicians utilize the two methods and drop moisture levels quicker than conventional companies can do.

The most drenched areas of the building get worked on first, after the source of the water has been fixed. If there is two inches or more of standing water inside the house, then a submersible pump sucks up the water and pumps it into a sewage drain. Next, depending on the type of affected material, our SERVPRO technicians use different extraction tools.

Some extraction wands are designed to remove water from flat non-porous surfaces like wood floors. For cleaning saturated carpet and pad, a weighted extraction tool can be used to compress the carpet and increase the effectiveness of the extraction process. We can also provide a Rover, a mobile SERVPRO technician driven device. The equipment uses the weight of the operator standing on top of it to squeeze the soft fibers in the carpet to pull out as much moisture as possible. For cleaning pieces of furniture and other items containing upholstery, a smaller handheld wand can be implemented.

After extraction is complete, the drying stage begins. During the dry-out step, we use equipment to create an environment that speeds up evaporation. Air movers get placed around the wet region and are positioned so that they hit wet surfaces at a 45-degree angle and push air in a counterclockwise motion. Dehumidification systems are then placed in the room to pull moisture out of the air and exhaust hot air out for the air movers to use. These step of the water damage and restoration service may take many days, depending on the severity of the water intrusion, time left untreated, temperature, and the structure involved.

Moisture levels get monitored each day the equipment is set up. We utilize infrared cameras, thermal hygrometers, and regular moisture meters to know when we have achieved our baselines needed for correct moisture content levels. Once the levels reach what they were before the loss, we remove our equipment. If you ever need assistance with water-related issues, contact SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview at (504) 468-3046 24/7.

Water Cleanup Risks In New Orleans

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

New Orleans Water Removal and the Expertise of SERVPRO

Identifying and Removing Potentially Contaminated Water Is a SERVPRO Cornerstone Service

New Orleans floods, a lot. It is almost a normal part of our lives here, so cleaning up from water in our homes is a regular occurrence for residents and restoration services.

Performing a water cleanup in New Orleans takes much than just a large Water-Vac and a push broom, however. SERVPRO teams have to identify the category of water that floods a home to determine the cleaning method and what precautions they need to take to keep our technicians and the homeowner safe.

Category One is Clean Water. It does not contain waste products. Burst pipes, leaking faucets, and some failing appliances are the usual sources of clean water. Natural disasters can damage roofs and expose homes to rain and snow. This category presents minimal health risks during removal and requires no special requirements for cleanup. If the water flowed over the soil before entering the home, however, it is not considered clean water. As a caveat, if rainwater intruding through the attic soaks through insulation and items, it is not clean water.

Category Two is Gray Water. It is water that was used but does not contain human waste. This category includes water from an overflowing washer that drops detergent-filled water on the floor. An overflowing toilet with no solid waste also is included in this category. Gray water is not a vector for spreading disease, but people can become sick by touching it, drinking it, or walking through it without protective footwear. Carpet soaked in gray water needs thorough cleaning for restoration and furniture needs to be sprayed or wiped down with an anti-bacterial cleaner.

Category Three is Black Water. This unsanitary water often contains human waste and presents a health threat to anyone who comes in contact with it. SERVPRO technicians wear protective gear while removing it from each home. Before starting removal, our teams also spray the surfaces with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal cleaners to reduce the risk. They treat all floodwater as Black Water since it is impossible to know what it traveled through before it entered a home. Team leaders dispose of carpets soaked in Black Water and only recommend attempting to clean high-value rugs since technicians can lift them from the floor and soaked them in a biocide solution that kills all living organisms.

SERVPRO cannot emphasize enough the need for grappling with floods differently than from a water line leak. Safety first, and we are proud to help our neighbors.

If you are dealing with water intrusion in your home, contact SERVPRO of North Kenner, Harahan & Lakeview to determine the category of the threat to your home and family. Call us today at (504) 468-3046.
